Gin Rummy Strategies for Tedesco

Teaser: Strategies for Tedesco Gin Rummy

With Tedesco Gin, we are once again dealing with a popular variation of classic Gin Rummy.

With the matching custom rule, you can also play Tedesco online in the Gin Rummy Palace, of course. By the way, Tedesco is even more fun if you combine it with the custom rule Cyclic Sequences. This means that melds made up of King-Ace-Two, for example, are also possible.

You can find out about further available Gin Rummy variants at the Palace on our page about Gin Rummy Variants or in the Gin Rummy Lessons. Last time, we talked about the famous Oklahoma Gin. But now, back to the topic of Tedesco Gin!

What Does Tedesco Do Differently?

On the surface, this game mode affects the rules around both knocking and the aces. We will now look at these two in turn and then go into how you can adapt your strategy to these surface changes and their effects.

Aces in Tedesco Gin

If Tedesco applies at the table and you knock, unmelded Aces in opponents’ hands count as 15 points instead of one point towards the deadwood.

Drawing and Knocking in Tedesco Gin

If you draw from the discard, i.e., the open pile, you can only knock in the same turn if you add the drawn card to a meld.

Tedesco Gin: no knocking without melding an openly drawn card
Henry just drew the Four of Spades after Emma discarded it. With that card loosely added to Henry’s hand, he can’t knock in this turn even though discarding any of his unmelded cards would fit the deadwood threshold of 10 points.

Of course, Henry had a reason to draw the face-up Four of Spades: It fits his sequence of Spades! Now that he added it to that meld in the same turn, he is allowed to knock.

Effects of the Changes in Tedesco Gin

Aces are now much more dangerous than before. While drawing an open Ace in the basic game is almost second nature, this maneuver can lead to disaster with Tedesco: If you draw an Ace and can’t meld it, you can’t knock because the Tedesco rules prohibit this.

Things get really messy if your opponent then uses their turn to knock, and you no longer get a chance to meld or discard your drawn Ace.

Tedesco Gin: high deadwood points due to an unmelded Ace
Emma knocked with an Ace in hand. Since she is the one who knocked, her Ace has the usual value of 1 point, even under Tedesco Gin Rules. Henry also had an unmelded Ace in his deadwood. In basic Gin Rummy, Henry’s deadwood would sum up to 9 points. But in Tedesco Gin, Henry’s Ace adds 15 points to the deadwood, bringing it up to 23 points.

As the Aces now pose a certain risk, they end up in the discard pile much more often than in the basic game.

What Do You Do Differently With Tedesco?

Due to the danger of the Aces and the fact that there are now four more high-value cards in the game, gameplay priorities shift, and caution is required when handling the cards as usual.

Your Goal for the Round

The aim of the game remains the same: to score the required number of points first and leave the table triumphant.

However, Tedesco Gin changes the methods to score points per round compared to basic Gin Rummy.

Playing on a Gin or an undercut is simply more dangerous in this variant, especially if you start the round with one Ace. Instead, knocking as soon as possible is the most promising option.

Handling Aces

You’ve surely already realized: Aces are no longer cards you should keep or draw if you can’t meld them. This applies all the more as your round progresses. It’s better to discard one or two Aces if you don’t have a meld within reach.

Tedesco Gin: Discarding an Ace
The Ace of Diamonds has no close matches in Henry’s hand. Time to discard it and reduce the risk of high deadwood points.

As the Aces are equally undesirable for everyone at a Tedesco table, feel free to discard them as soon as possible.

Admittedly, you may be unlucky and find that your discarded Ace just fits your opponent’s hand. However, this will be the exception rather than the rule.

Another small rule of thumb regarding Aces in Tedesco Gin is that after discarding an Ace, your opponent will likely discard another Ace throughout the round.

New Role for the Twos

The Ace has lost its role as the card you can always draw. The Two now takes its place. It has the lowest deadwood value in the game. Therefore, even if the Two doesn’t generate a meld in your hand, it is the safest bet you can find in Tedesco Gin.
